The Emergency Preparedness Coordinator serves as the county’s coordinating officer in the event of a natural disaster. In such an event, the coordinator is empowered and required to coordinate and render assistance to the city and county officials in the development of plans for the use of all facilities, equipment, manpower, and other resources of the city and county in order to minimize and prevent damage to residents and property as a result of a natural disaster or from spills of hazardous materials.

A new weather radar system was recently added at the Emergency Preparedness Center to provide for sufficient warning to the public of threatening storms.

Family Prepardness
Disaster Supply Kit

Disaster can strike quickly and without warning. It can force you to evacuate your neighborhood or confine you to your home. Every family should have a Disaster Supply Kit to help during this time. In a disaster such as a hurricane or earthquake you might be without electricity and the water supply may be polluted. During a flood or winter storm you may not be able to leave your house for a few days and you will need to rely on yourself. Store items in sturdy, easy-to-carry containers such as back-packs, duffle bags, or covered trash containers. Remember, your family will probably never need to use your kit, but it's always better to be prepared.

Elevated Condition (Yellow). An Elevated Condition is declared when there is a significant risk of terrorist attacks. In addition to the Protective Measures taken in the previous Threat Conditions, Federal departments and agencies should consider the following general measures in addition to the Protective Measures that they will develop and implement:
1. Increasing surveillance of critical locations;
2. Coordinating emergency plans as appropriate with nearby jurisdictions;
3. Assessing whether the precise characteristics of the threat require the further refinement of preplanned Protective Measures; and
4. Implementing, as appropriate, contingency and emergency response plans
